* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures on employment, which show that Brazil registered an unemployment rate of 11.2% in the rolling quarter ending in February. This is down 0.4 percentage points compared with the September-November 2021 rolling quarter, and 3.1 percentage points year-on-year. However, the unemployment rate remains unchanged from the immediately preceding rolling quarter, ending in January. Some 12m people are unemployed in Brazil, while 95.2m are in work, a number broadly unchanged from three months earlier. “In the quarter ending in February, there was a reduction in the population seeking work, which has already been observed in previous quarters. The difference is that this quarter, there was not a significant increase in the employed population,” Adriana Beringuy, Ibge coordinator, said. Average real-term wages fell 8.8% year-on-year in the rolling quarter ending in February.
