* Protesters in Bolivia’s Desaguadero municipality (La Paz department) who have been blocking one of the main highways between Bolivia and Peru since 18 March, have said that they will not lift their roadblock until they secure a meeting with President
Luis Arce. The demonstrators are demanding the construction of a dual carriageway which was supposed to be begun in 2018, but which is still in the design stage. The road would cost an estimated US$428m, according to Bolivia’s highway administrator (ABC).
Marcelino Limachi, a local indigenous leader, warned yesterday that
“we’re asking that our President Luis Arce comes here to negotiate, we’re not going to accept commissions.” He added that protesters
“will radicalise” their action if their demands are not met.
