CHILE: Boric takes office

Gabriel Boric was sworn-in on 11 March, receiving the presidential sash from Sebastián Piñera in a ceremony in congress. Chile’s youngest head of state, 36, and the most left-wing since Salvador Allende was overthrown in 1973, promised to give his “body and soul to make the country better”. Improving social justice for all Chileans is the lodestar for Boric’s government, with indigenous rights at the core of his vision. But he was immediately served notice of the difficulty of resolving the intractable Mapuche conflict when, shortly after taking office, his interior minister had to be evacuated by the police as gunshots rang out during her visit to the southern region of La Araucanía.
