A video began circulating on social media in the afternoon of 27 February that soon came to the attention of security forces in Mexico’s western state of Michoacán. It showed armed men executing a group of people in a residential street in broad daylight. The victims, who are believed to number between 10 and 17, were attending a funeral in the town of San José de Gracia, close to the border with Jalisco state. The following day, schools in the town reportedly remained closed amid fears of further violence, one more sign of the impact that staggering levels of violent crime is having on the inhabitants of Michoacán.
