*Government representatives from the southeast Mexican states of Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz and Yucatán have signed a letter of intent for the sustainable economic development of the region, during a meeting with US Ambassador to Mexico
Ken Salazar on 23 February, the third such meeting in five months. The American Chamber of Commerce of Mexico (AmCham), US-based NGO The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) were also present at the meeting, which focused on promoting conservation in the Yucatán peninsula – comprising the states of Yucatán, Campeche, and Quintana Roo - and economic development in the region in general. Salazar stated TNC had recently received a US$30m grant from USAID for environmental conservation in the region, and
“has committed to mobilising” another US$60m for conservation and sustainable development efforts. Salazar said the meeting also addressed challenges facing the development of a
“more robust tourism economy” and promoted collaboration between US digital companies and Mexico to
