The International Monetary Fund (IMF) board of directors granted informal approval on 16 February to the proposed US$44.5bn financial rescue package for Argentina. President Alberto Fernández now faces a four-week countdown to get congressional ratification before 22 March. If he fails, Argentina will once more plunge into default. Politically, the way ahead is still fraught with difficulties.
