* Brazil’s national association of vehicle manufacturers (Anfavea) has released results for January 2022, saying that “the first month of the year did not bring good indicators for the automobile industry”. Vehicle production in Brazil fell 27.4% in January this year compared with January 2021, to 145,400 units, while domestic sales dropped 26.1% to 126,500. Only exports increased year-on-year, by 6.6% to 27,600 units. Anfavea notes that the automobile sales historically always see a cool start to the year due to a natural post-Christmas slow-down and holidays, but admits that “this January was especially complicated for the automotive sector” due to ongoing shortages of key components and, more specifically, the impact of the wave of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus (Covid-19) in Brazil.
