In brief: Brazil records trade deficit in January

* Brazil’s economy ministry has released the January figures for the country’s trade balance, which show that Brazil recorded a US$176m trade deficit in the first month of the year. Exports totalled US$19.67bn in January – up 25.3% on a year earlier – while imports totalled US$19.85bn, up 24.6%, leaving Brazil with a US$39.52bn balance of trade in January. The government has been keen to stress that despite the small deficit, Brazil’s exports surged to the highest level since current records began in 1997.
