* Bolivia’s national statistics institute (INE) has announced that poverty declined in 2021, with moderate poverty affecting 36.3% of the population (down 2.7 percentage points year-on-year) and extreme poverty affecting 11.1% (down 2.6 percentage points). Inequality also fell in 2021, with the INE reporting that Bolivia’s Gini coefficient (in which 0 represents total equality and 1 represents maximal inequality) decreased from 0.45 to 0.42. The INE noted that the richest 10% of the population held 20 times more wealth than the poorest 10%, which it said was “the smallest gap in the history of our country.” The INE attributed the reduction in poverty and inequality to the socioeconomic policies of President Luis Arce’s administration, highlighting cash transfers to over 4m Bolivians suffering from hunger and the allowance of early pension withdrawals, among other things.
