John Kerry and Latin America

Senator John Kerry's convincing wins in five of the seven primary races on 3 February mean that he is almost certain to become the Democratic Party's challenger to President George W Bush in the November presidential elections. Kerry faces an uphill task to beat Bush. US society no longer thinks of itself as liberal: perhaps it never was. A recent nationwide opinion poll in the US found that barely 20% of US citizens were prepared to call themselves liberals. More importantly, no Democrat from the northeast has won the presidency for over 40 years. The last to do so was since John F. Kennedy in 1960.
