In brief: US raises more concerns over Mexico energy reform
* US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm has stated that she repeatedly conveyed the “real concerns” that the US government has regarding Mexico’s proposed electricity sector reform in her recent visit to Mexico. Granholm said that during her meetings with Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Energy Minister Rocío Nahle, among others, she had expressed concerns about “the potential negative impact” of the reform on US private investment in Mexico, as well as its capacity to “hinder US-Mexico joint efforts on clean energy and climate”. She also stressed that the US values its relationship with Mexico, its second-biggest trading partner, and had a “fundamental interest” in seeing it succeed. The reform, which López Obrador is currently trying to push through congress, would prioritise the state-run electricity firm Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) over private renewable energy providers. It has provoked widespread anti-competition and environmental concerns.
