EL SALVADOR: Raids on NGOs heighten democracy fears

With democracy-related concerns already rife following the Salvadorean government’s recent unveiling of a proposed foreign agents law [WR-21-46], authorities have set off further alarm bells among civil-society groups after the attorney general’s office (FGR) and national police (PNC) carried out a string of raids on seven NGOs. The raids, which were followed with reports of possible spying by the government on certain journalists, will fuel existing human rights and democracy concerns regarding the perceived authoritarianism of President Nayib Bukele and his Nuevas Ideas (NI) government which have intensified since the new NI-controlled legislature took up its seats in May.
