HONDURAS: Castro pulls ahead
With less than a month until the 28 November general election, the first voter intention surveys since the launch of the new opposition alliance between Xiomara Castro and Salvador Nasralla, whereby Castro would seek the presidency [WR-21-41], reveal that she has overtaken the frontrunner, Tegucigalpa mayor Nasry Asfura, the candidate for the ruling Partido Nacional (PN). This evident challenge to the PN and President Juan Orlando Hernández, whose own 2017 victory was the subject of much controversy, comes amid mounting fears regarding the integrity of the electoral process (which stem from the lack of any meaningful electoral reform) and a repeat of the irregularities which marred the 2017 vote, causing deadly violence.
