Exports surge. On 19 August Panama’s national statistics institute (Inec) released new figures which show that Panama’s exports totalled US$1.66bn in the first half of the year, a 108.7% increase on the same period in 2020. The Inec report in particular highlights the performance of copper and its concentrates which accounted for US$1.3bn of exports and was up 185% on the same period last year, followed by teak (US$34m, up 64%), and palm oil (US$16.5m, up 61.6%). According to Inec director Samuel Moreno, the export markets to have seen the highest increase were: mainland China which accounted for US$581.5m of exports, a 326.1% increase on the same period in 2020; South Korea (US$183.5m, up 236.5%; and Japan (US$176.0m, up 486.1%).
