COLOMBIA: Cocaine production at record high despite drop in coca cultivation

The latest report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on drug production in Colombia identified a paradoxical trend – although the land area dedicated to coca cultivation continued to shrink in 2020, cocaine production reached a record high. Several factors explain the discrepancy, including the apparent use of new production methods. The UNODC report comes as President Iván Duque’s administration is preparing to resume aerial coca fumigation, despite attempts by the political opposition to derail these plans.
