​Standing up to the anti-environmental agenda in Brazil

The protection of the environment is under threat in Brazil. Environmentalists repeat this ever louder and clearer, as government efforts to enforce environmental safeguards are eroded, congress pushes through an environmentally damaging legislative agenda, and deforestation continues apace in the Amazon, driven by activities such as cattle ranching and logging. With scientists warning that parts of the rainforest may now have turned into a carbon source, rather than a carbon sink, as a result of deforestation, the global environmental implications of failing to stem this destruction are great. But it is Brazil’s indigenous peoples, the first to feel the impacts of environmental destruction, who are at the forefront of the struggle to defend the environment there.
