International media outlets published the findings of an investigation alleging that the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018) used spyware between 2016 and 2017 to monitor more than 15,000 people, ranging from politicians and diplomats to journalists and human rights activists, including President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who was then a leading opposition politician.
