Only one of Chile’s 16 regional governors that take office on 14 July will represent President Sebastián Piñera’s right-of-centre Chile Vamos coalition. This could provide the beleaguered Piñera with another headache for his final eight months in office. The governors, elected by popular vote for the first time to serve a four-year term rather than handpicked by the head of state, will provide a counterweight to the central government. A record low turnout means it would be a mistake to read too much into the significance of the result, however, ahead of presidential and congressional elections on 21 November.End of preview - This article contains approximately 914 words.
