* Bolivia’s economy and finance minister,
Marcelo Montenegro, has announced that economic activity in the country increased by approximately 5.3% from January-April 2021. Citing data from the national statistics institute’s (INE) global indicator of economic activity (Igae), Montenegro highlighted the contrast with the same period in 2020, when activity fell by 7.5% due to restrictions imposed in the context of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. He said that the recent growth was most pronounced in the mining sector (34.2%), followed by construction (17.9%), hydrocarbons (10%), industrial manufacturing (9.6%), and trade (8.4%). Whilst Montenegro noted that the continuation of this economic rebound is contingent on the trajectory of the coronavirus pandemic, he said that it was clear that
“we’re on the right path”, predicting a
“gradual, progressive recovery”.
