In brief: Mexico’s private sector slams new energy policy

* Mexico's Consejo Coordinador Empresarial (CCE), a business lobby, has expressed “great worry” with the government’s new energy policy, which it is pushing forward in spite of strong concerns in the private sector. Both a reform to the hydrocarbons law, approved by congress last week, and an electricity reform passed last month “could cause economic, social and ecological damage to the country” the CCE warns. Noting that investment in the energy sector fell by 75% between 2018 (the year President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took office) and 2020, meaning that the opportunity to create 200,000 jobs was lost, the CCE warns that the government’s latest reforms will continue to inhibit investment and will have a negative impact on Mexicans for generations to come.
