COSTA RICA | Exports on the road to recovery. On 22 March Costa Rica’s official export promotion agency, Procomer, released new figures which show that in the first two months of 2021, the country’s exports totalled US$2bn, up 10% on the same period in 2020. Procomer highlights that growth was driven by increases in exports of medical and precision equipment (which accounted for 36% of total exports and was up 23%); food (which accounted for 14% of exports and was up 20%); and metalworking (which accounted for 4% of exports and was up 28%). However, Procomer notes that other exports from other sectors fell, including agriculture (which accounted for 21% of exports and was down 9%) and fisheries (which accounted for 3% of exports and was down 9%). The results led foreign trade minister, Andrés Valenciano, to declare that Costa Rica’s export sector is on the road to recovery.
