Infrastructure project postponed for pandemic funds. Paraguay’s President Mario Abdo Benítez announced on 14 April that the bidding process for the construction of a new bridge connecting Paraguay’s Capitán Carmelo Peralta, Alto Paraguay department, with Brazil’s Porto Murtinho, Mato Grosso do Sul state, will be postponed with the aim of using the funds to tackle the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Abdo Benítez said that the US$30m earmarked for the bridge project will be reassigned the health ministry to help with its pandemic efforts such as medicine procurement. He added that discussions regarding the launch of the bidding process would resume in June-July, with the possibility of delaying it further until 2022 if all of the funds ended up being used to combat the pandemic.
