Honduras: On 12 April Honduras’s foreign minister, Lisandro Rosales, announced the installation of five working tables with the US to address transparency & anti-corruption; security & defence; a reconstruction plan; climate change & economic opportunities; and migration. Rosales said that this was in line with a bilateral dialogue which began on 4 February with the Coordinator for the Southern Border on the US National Security Council (NSC), Roberta Jacobson, and Special Assistant to the US President and Senior Director for the Western Hemisphere at the National Security Council, Juan González. The state of bilateral relations had sparked speculation following allegations implicating Honduras’s President Juan Orlando Hernández in drug trafficking, particularly after Honduras was not included in a recent visit to Central America by the new US envoy for Central America, Ricardo Zúñiga, who visited only El Salvador and Guatemala. However, in an interview with CNN en Español broadcast on 11 April, González underlined that the US was open to working with President Hernández, saying “[Hernández] is currently the elected president of Honduras, and we will work with his government and find areas of common interest”.
