At the start of March, Colombia’s Vice President Marta Lucía Ramírez urged the attorney general’s office to “end impunity for the killers of women and girls” – a statement that prompted a package of measures targeting femicide and domestic abuse. This appeared to be a step in the right direction for a country where gender violence regularly ignites street protests but where concrete policies have often been lacking. However, continued allegations of sexual abuse by the security forces, as well as ambiguity over the number of women murdered in 2020, have prompted accusations of window dressing. Meanwhile, the wider Andean region has struggled to reduce violence against women over the last year.
