CENTRAL AMERICA: Making good a key pledge

In recent days the new US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has spoken with his counterparts from Honduras (Lisandro Rosales); El Salvador (Alexandra Hill); and Guatemala (Pedro Brolo). The discussions, which in all cases broached the structural problems driving migration from the three so-called Northern Triangle countries to the US, are significant, coming less than a month after the US administration led by President Joe Biden took office. They suggest the new Biden administration is serious about its declared pledge of addressing the root causes of illegal migration. This is in marked contrast to the hard-line anti-immigration stance pursued by its predecessor Donald Trump (2017-2021) as evidenced in controversial migration agreements such as the Asylum Cooperative Agreements (ACAs).
