Primary fiscal surplus. Argentina posted a primary fiscal surplus of Ar$24.07bn (US$255.4m) in January, the economy ministry reported on 22 February. The January surplus is in stark contract with the Ar$3.76bn primary deficit recorded in January 2020 and has been hailed by the economy ministry as evidence that Argentina’s longstanding fiscal deficit is being dealt with by the administration led by President Alberto Fernández. Once the repayment of debts is included, this becomes a Ar$3.03bn fiscal deficit, but this is the lowest deficit since 2016.
