Mounting pressure for police reform
One of the most prominent global trends of 2020 was the emergence of police violence as a matter of mainstream political debate. Police brutality has long been a problem in the Andean region, and while this is by no means the first time that the topic has been put under the microscope, there are increasingly signs that this debate may have finally moved beyond civil society forums and into the halls of power, with reform agendas spurred on by the momentum of collective action across Latin America, and indeed across the world. If police violence was a key theme of 2020, campaigners will hope that 2021 can bring important progress towards police reform.
