Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega appealed to the national assembly on 30 January to create a ministry for space, the moon, and other celestial bodies, which he said was necessary to “defend supreme national interests”. Opposition parties lampooned Ortega’s announcement as final confirmation that he is losing his grip on reality, but they remain unable to find a way of loosening his grip on the presidency. There were urgent calls this week to present a united opposition front against Ortega in November’s presidential and legislative elections.
