VENEZUELA: Caracas bucks slowdown in region's highest murder rate

Though Venezuela's overall murder rate appears to have fallen considerably since last year, in Caracas it is continuing to rise. Venezuela has the highest homicide rate in South America — the rate there has more than doubled since 1997. An alarming feature of Venezuelan statistics is that homicide has become the leading cause of death for young people aged 15-24.
