MEXICO-US | 'Virtual border wall' initiatives. Rudolf Giuliani, former mayor of New York and aspirant to the Republican presidential nomination, proposed on 19 November the creation of a 'virtual wall' along the Mexican border, which he said was likely to prove more valuable than physical barriers. His idea is to use night-vision equipment and infrared cameras trained on the Mexican side of the Rí­o Grande (known in Mexico as the Rí­o Bravo). This, he said, would alert the US Border Patrol to any movements of people without affecting the use of the river.
