MEXICO-US | 'Virtual border wall' initiatives. Rudolf Giuliani, former mayor of New York and aspirant to the Republican presidential nomination, proposed on 19 November the creation of a 'virtual wall' along the Mexican border, which he said was likely to prove more valuable than physical barriers. His idea is to use night-vision equipment and infrared cameras trained on the Mexican side of the Río Grande (known in Mexico as the Río Bravo). This, he said, would alert the US Border Patrol to any movements of people without affecting the use of the river.
