Violence in Brazil has been steadily rising over the past decade. It reached a peak in 2017, when the country saw a record of over 64,000 homicides, equivalent to a rate of 30.8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. With insecurity and fear of crime a daily concern for most Brazilians, the issue features high on the list of their concerns, but Bolsonaro was the first to make it a campaign matter in a presidential election, the FGV’s Mesquita says.
