HAITI: Moïse hangs on
President Jovenel Moïse has survived an impeachment motion put forward by a handful of opposition legislators which accused him of “high treason” based on what they described as various flagrant breaches of the constitution. The vote is no doubt a relief for Moïse, who remains hugely unpopular due to the worsening economic situation (with annual inflation running at 18.6% in June) and scandal involving the alleged embezzlement of funds from Venezuela’s discounted-oil initiative. It comes as Haiti continues to face crisis however stemming from the opposition’s hitherto refusal to ratify Moïse’s choice of prime minister. This has effectively left the country without a functioning government since March 2019 following Jean Henry Céant’s departure as prime minister after losing a no confidence vote.
