* Brazil’s Departamento Intersindical de Estatística e Estudos Socioeconômicos (Dieese), a union-run statistics institute, has reported that the price of the basic basket of goods has increased in Brazil’s state capitals from February to March 2019. Dieese’s study looked at the price of the basic basket of goods in 18 of the 27 state capitals in the country. The state capital with the most significant increase in prices in March was Brasília, in the Federal District (11.09%), followed by Florianópolis, Santa Catarina state (7.28%), São Luís, Maranhão state (7.26%), and Curitiba, Paraná state (7.20%). However, the state capital with the most expensive basic basket of goods was São Paulo where it cost R$509.11 (US$132), followed by Rio de Janeiro with R$496.33 (US$129) and Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul state, with R$479.53 (US$124). The price of the basic basket of goods also increased in all of the studied state capitals from March 2018 to March 2019. The state capitals with the most significant yearly increase in prices in March 2019 were Goiânia, Goiás state (20.25%), Salvador, Bahia state (18.42%), and Brasília (17.39%).
