In brief: Brazil

* Brazil’s mines & energy ministry has authorised the installation of 25 ‘clean energy’ electricity generation plants in the states of Ceará, Bahia, Minas Gerais, and Mato Grosso. The 14 solar plants, eight wind-power stations, two hydroelectric dams, and one biomass plant have already been subjected to public tenders. The electricity generation plants will requrie R$4.5bn (US$1.1bn) in investment, and they are expected to generate 4,040 jobs as well as add 883 megawatts to the national grid by 2021. Clean energy sources are already an important part of Brazil’s energy matrix. According to official sources, clean energy accounted for 81.9% of the country’s electricity production and 87.8% of total energy production in June.
