* Brazil’s federal government has announced the creation of a new agency dedicated to managing the country’s museums. The Agência Brasileira de Museus (Abram) will take over the management of Brazil’s 27 federal museums and promote the development of the museum sector. It will also be responsible for the reconstruction of the country’s national museum which was
destroyed in a fire last week. The government announced at the same time plans to introduce new legislation encouraging and regulating private donations to museums, known as endowment funds. Culture Minister Sérgio Sá Leitão said: “Endowment funds are the principal source of cultural financing in Europe and the US. We are now catching up with the times where the management of resources for culture is concerned”. The fire at Brazil’s national museum has drawn attention to the lack of funding and poor management that plague the country’s cultural institutions.
