Colombia: US telecommunications firm, Hughes Network Systems, has announced that its recently launched satellite will begin operating in October, bringing satellite internet to 1.5m homes in rural Colombia. Hughes country manager, Roque Lombardo, made the announcement during the Andicom congress in Cartagena de Indias, Bolívar department, an event focused on the information and communication technology sector. The Hughes 63W satellite was launched on 23 July and is expected to enhance broadband speeds to between 15 and 50 megabytes with 96% coverage. It is hoped that by reaching remote areas of the country, it will benefit sectors such as the coffee, palm, flower, and livestock industries.
