* Brazil’s national civil aviation agency (Anac) has successfully concluded negotiations with the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg for the establishment of bilateral ‘open skies’ agreements. The agreements lift mutual restrictions on flights between Brazilian airports and each of these three countries, and significantly includes fifth freedom traffic rights (the right to carry passengers from one's own country to a second country, and from that country to a third country). They also maintain air fare pricing freedom and the conditions for code sharing, both bilateral and with companies from third countries, according to previously signed agreements. At the end of last year, Anac ended an unsuccessful eight years of negotiations for an open skies treaty with the European Union (EU), over the EU’s refusal to grant Brazilian carriers fifth freedom traffic rights.
