Guatemala: In the face of continued drought, Guatemala’s agriculture minister, Mario Méndez Montenegro, has ordered staff to visit affected regions and measure crop losses. According to an official press release, the latest surveys show that 118,187.63 hectares of crops were damaged, affecting 157,651 families. Solutions such as crop diversification and community micro-irrigation systems have been proposed as a long-term response. In the short-term, officials from the municipal commissions for food and nutritional security (Comusanes) – multi-sector working groups that deal with food security in different regions – have been tasked with drawing up a list of affected families and assessing their vulnerability. Those who lost all or part of their harvest will receive government assistance under a programme that will be finalised at future meetings.
