* Brazil’s national statistics institute (IBGE) has released new economic figures which show that industrial activity in the country increased by 13.1% in June compared with May. This is the highest month-on-month increase in activity recorded by IBGE since the start of the historical series in 2002. The June result largely offset the 11% month-on-month fall in industrial activity observed in May as a result of the 11-day lorry drivers’ strike over petrol fuel prices. Indeed, IBGE notes that the June figures represent a 3.5% year-on-year increase in activity and that they bring the accumulated increase in activity so far this year to 2.3%.
