Nicaragua: Guatemala’s association of exporters (Agexport) has told reporters that more than 4,000 Guatemalan lorries are currently stranded on the border with Nicaragua. This is due to the blockades currently being staged in Nicaragua as part of efforts to get President Daniel Ortega to find a solution to the political crisis which erupted mid-April following a deadly crackdown by the security forces against anti-government protesters – violence which has since continued. On 10 June Nicaraguan human rights NGO Centro Nicaragüense de Derechos Humanos (Cenidh) put the death toll at 139 since the unrest erupted. On 10 June Francisca Ramírez, an indigenous leader from the Consejo Nacional para la Defensa de la Tierra, Lago y Soberanía Nacional protest group, said that at least 127 roadblocks had been erected over the weekend (9-10 June) up from 40 in response to the latest bout of violence.
