Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro announced at the weekend that an unspecified number of prisoners would be released as his government seeks to lure the political opposition to the dialogue table with a view to regaining some kind of credibility at home and abroad in the wake of his controversial re-election on 20 May. Maduro’s move did not buy him any time.
