Chile: Chile’s finance minister, Felipe Larraín, has said that he believes that economic activity in the county may have increased by as much as 5% in April, higher than the 4% increase recorded by the central bank (BCCh) in its monthly economic activity index (Imacec), a GDP proxy measure, in March. The March Imacec figure was the highest since July 2013 and has been taken as a sign that Chile’s domestic economy is finally coming out of the economic slowdown it has been under since then. In an interview published in the local media on 13 May, Larraín said that he expected that the economic activity in April would be even higher than in March, noting that this year there were three more working days in April compared with April 2017. “We have started to see better times,” Larraín concluded.
