Guatemala: Thousands of teachers in Guatemala have called off a strike which has lasted more than 22 days after reaching a deal with the education ministry, mediated by the human rights ombudsman Jordán Rodas. The teachers’ union Sindicato de Trabajadores por la Educación de Guatemala (Steg) led by Joviel Acevedo has been calling on the government led by President Jimmy Morales to make good on a deal made in February which included a 5% annual pay rise over three consecutive years and the payment of a Q2,500 (US$340) bonus for all teachers. According to both sides, Education Minister Óscar López agreed to meet with members of the congressional finance committee to continue efforts to ensure the pact is honoured. According to the government some 80,000 students have been affected.
