*Representatives from Mexico’s official trade promotion agency, ProMéxico, have inaugurated the Mexico-Egypt business council during a ceremony in Egypt’s capital, Cairo. The new body will seek to promote economic and business ties between Mexico and Egypt, as part of Mexico’s strategy to increase its presence in Africa, the Middle East, and the Arab world. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, ProMéxico director Paulo Carreño King noted that Egypt is Mexico’s seventh-largest trading partner in Africa with bilateral trade reaching US$82.7m in 2015. But Carreño King said that the with a market of 90m people there are more opportunities for Mexican businesses in Egypt, which he said is “the gateway to the Middle East and the Arab world”.
