Paraguay: Héctor Cristaldo, the president of the Unión de Gremios de la Producción (UGP), a local agricultural producers’ grouping, has expressed concerns that the current month-long drought in the country is going to negatively impact some of Paraguay’s main export crops such as maize and soya. Cristaldo predicted that the drought would produce significant crop losses, of around 30% to 40%. He also warned that, if the drought continues, it will be difficult for the agricultural sector to hit its yield targets for this year. Soya yields, although stable, are lagging behind their target of 1,200 kg per hectare. In a good year, soya yields can reach well over 2,000 kg per hectare, the UGP president declared.
