The world is on the threshold of a major transport revolution. A new wave of innovation and technological change promises to disrupt and transform the way we transport both people and things. The change is beginning in some parts of the more advanced economies (there are clusters of innovation and experimentation in places like Silicon Valley and Pittsburgh in the US, as well as in various localities across Europe and Asia). Initially, the change is also concentrated in some specific types of transport: the current focus is on autonomous vehicles – AVs – for passenger transport, and on the transition from internal combustion to electric engines.
