In brief: Peru

Peru: The head of Peru’s official exports and tourism promotion agency (PromPerú), Luis Torres, has said that Peru’s textile exports could increase by between 6% and 8% this year. Peru exported US$1.3bn worth of textiles in 2017, a 6.1% year-on-year increase that has been attributed to PromPerú’s efforts to promote the sector in the past four years. However, Torres said that he now wants to see textile exports increase by 8% so that the sector can once again reach the peak export level of US$2bn recorded ten years ago. Torres made his remarks during the opening of the 21st edition of the Peru Moda and Peru Moda Deco 2018 three-day sector fair that will be hosted in Lima from 25 April. According to Torres, textiles exports can lead to the “internationalisation” of Peruvian fashion, and he hopes that the event will surpass the US$108m that it generated last year.
