* A court in the northern state of Amazonas has levied a R$11.7m (US$3.5m) fine on
Facebook for failing to cooperate with ‘Operation Misguided Paths’, which investigates irregularities in health spending. They alleged the US company did not provide crucial evidence from conversations on WhatsApp, which is owned by
Facebook. The value of the penalty is the sum of daily R$1m (US$300,000) fines accrued from 13 June 2016 when the court order was given to 20 September 2016, the final deadline for
Facebook to comply.
Facebook has said it is cooperating with the authorities and considered the fine unfair. It has the right to appeal to higher courts.
