Peru: Peru’s President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has announced that his government will spend over PEN7bn (US$2.1bn) this year to advance the reconstruction efforts in northern and central areas of the country affected by severe rains and flooding last year. Speaking during a visit to the northern region of Piura, the worst affected by the floods, Kuczynski said that the central government has so far disbursed PEN2.2bn to fund some 468 infrastructure reconstruction projects in 13 regions affected by the natural disaster. Yet Kuczynski insisted that more government investment is needed to accelerate the reconstruction efforts and reactivate the local economy in the affected areas, amid growing criticisms that the reconstruction efforts have been advancing too slowly in some areas.
